2000 years ago, under Roman Dominion, this tiny settlement lying at the feet of the Mecsek Hills developed itself into a big town, receiving the name - Sopianae - of Celtic origin. According to archaeological finds even prehistoric people found the light slopes of Mecsek fit for habitation.

Nowadays Pécs is the fifth most densely inhabited town of Hungary - and it owes its worldwide reputation to its rich cultural life.
